| | ICT for Development - Google SMS Launches (29th Jun 09 at 5:16pm UTC) | | In partnership with providers including the Grameen Foundation and MTN Uganda, Google has launched a suite of SMS-powered mobile applications that will help people in African countries access Internet-based information on a diverse number of topics.
These apps represent an innovative response to the challenge of installing the systems and infrastructure that enable traditional PC-powered Internet access.
People will be able to access topics including health and agriculture tips, news, local weather, and sports. The suite also includes Google Trader, a SMS-based “marketplace” application that helps buyers and sellers find each other. People can find, "sell" or "buy" any type of product or service, from used cars and mobile phones to crops, livestock and jobs.
