| | The curse of natural resources (10th May 09 at 3:36pm UTC) | | I have been reading a lot of posts from the World Bank blog lately. I read another interesting post about the curse of natural resources, what they called the Dutch vs Nigerian Disease. The Dutch disease is an economic concept that explains the relationship between exploitation of natural resources and the decline in the manufacturing sector. This take place when the manufacturing sector becomes increasingly less competitive due to an increase in exchange rates.
The Nigerian disease on the other hand is when, according to the World Bank, an abundance of natural resources leads to poorer governance and conflicts. Governments focus less on accountability towards its people and have few incentives for institutional and pro growth development.
This is something that has been discussed in academia for a while, and I am interested to follow the discussion on a World Bank level. | |
