This Summer the Student Microfinance & Development Initiative is sending top students to 158 Leading Social Entrepreneurs of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship around the world to intern.

| | From Congo With Love (4th Mar 10 at 11:30am GMT) | | From Congo With Love
From Congo With Love is a photography exhibition on London's South Bank. I was in London last week and was lucky to have some spare minutes to walk to the National Theatre near Waterloo station to see the photos, and WOW! There are some fantastic pictures and, more so, fantastic and moving stories.
The photographer Rankin's exhibition - in conjunction with Oxfam - From Congo With Love shows and tells you what LOVE means to the people of Congo and the context within which their love exists.
My favourite section of the exhibition was a collage of photos taken by the locals. Rankin armed a great number of kids and adults alike with disposable cameras - and some basic photography skills - and let them run free to take pictures of what they loved. One child, Rangombo, loves football and had a poster of Arsenal FC on his wall, so he took a picture of that! Tell us, what is your favourite photo?
The exhibition is FREE and is situated OUTSIDE the National Theatre. It is open for another week, until Thursday 11th April, 2010.

| | Paid field internship at SMDI (3rd Feb 10 at 9:21am GMT) | | UYDO has some links with SMDI, an LSE-based student thinktank. They have a couple of really exciting opportunities for students to get involved - see below for more details!
SMDI is currently conducting research on the impact of the financial crisis on microfinance institutions and on the repayment rates of microfinance institutions. In Spring 2010 SMDI will send two students to Bangladesh and India/Western Nepal to continue this research on the ground with its two partner organisation BRAC (Bangladesh) and Shivia (India/Western Nepa). SMDI will be paying for the flight as well as accomodation costs on the ground.
SMDI wants every student interested to have a chance to research on the ground and has therefore decided to open applications for membership in the Project teams. The application form as well as job description for BRAC and Shivia can be found on the SMDI Website under http://smdi.org.uk/index.php/resources | |

You will understand, why I am saying the above.
Thanks.

Guest | | Re: Sustainable Christmas (10th Dec 09 at 7:36pm GMT) | | Hi, I'm here, actually because Kris Hylland found my organization and campaign on Facebook, and I have an answer that I think you'll really appreciate I quite agree with all that's been said, and I personally have traditionally had this horrible pit of regret in my stomach when all the presents are opened, and there are those MASSIVE bags of refuse left over (I've stopped buying wrapping paper, and instead substitute re-usable gift bags, but there's all the stuff that people give us!!) from all the presents that my family and I have received. It's just horrible. The waste and impact to the environment is totally insane. And never mind some of the stuff I get *sigh* -- the Christmas crackers, or more commonly here in the US, the "Stocking Stuffers" -- it's just silly, people trying to find little gifts that fit in the stocking, and all the packaging, it really all is enough to make you scream "ENOUGH already".
I'm very fortunate to be involved with an incredible campaign, as I said, which has an extremely cool premise -- asking your loved ones to give charitably, in your name, to your favorite charity! I was just awestruck when I heard this, it's such a coup. I've long worked for non-profit companies and bemoaned my own shallow pockets, all the organizations I'd love to give to...and now I can <3 <3 <3
It's a wonderful idea, one I hope you all will help me spread like wildfire. It's so flexible, it's perfect!
Those inclined to do so can find our home on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/RedefineChristmas and the website is http://www.redefine-christmas.org.
Just think of all the good it can do, it's so great!

Guest | | Re: Sustainable Christmas (9th Dec 09 at 9:06am GMT) | | What about not buying stuff? Focus more on experiences or services, things that are not extracted from the ground. For example, a trip to the opera for the parents, massage for the girls, cooking classes, and so forth. For the little kids you might have to buy some things, but make sure that you buy things that are not as bad for the environment. You can also sit down and talk to the kids and tell them that it might be better to give the toy away to hospitals or churches or something than to throw it away.

| | Re: Sustainable Christmas (8th Dec 09 at 9:19am GMT) | | Avoid buying (or receiving, for those who have any control over this!) the cheap, mostly plastic gadgets and the like that only appear at this time of year. I have to say it is tempting, especially when you're stuck for what to buy for a loved one, but essentially they simply get thrown away after a few months.
I guess the above point is relevant for Christmas crackers too - I wonder if you can buy 'ethical/environmental' crackers where you don't get a mini pack of playing cards, or something equally pointless...?
Normally I would ask for CDs for Christmas but I realise that one day I'll have to throw all the plastic that I have accumulated by buying CDs over the years out, so I'll happily receive a voucher to download music instead .

Guest | | Sustainable Christmas (3rd Dec 09 at 1:20pm GMT) | | Hi,
I've been thinking for a while about how to celebrate Christmas without making too much of an environmental impact.
I thought about buying local, organic food, replanting my Christmas tree and making sure I turn off my Christmas lights when I leave the room.
Does anyone have any more suggestions?
Thanks
